Skiing

Mrs. Rifenberick

I stand at the top of the hill; adrenaline rushes through my veins as I push off.  I start to gain speed, as the hill grows steeper.  The cold wind rips across my face and snot runs across my nose.  I edge my skis to the right and the then to the left as I meander down the slope.  I cut off on a trail through the woods and hit a jump upon reentry to the main course.  My skies clap as they hit the snow, and I begin to pick up more speed as I enter the steepest part of the hill.  I make it to the lift and I edge my skies hard.  Snow flies into the air as I skid to a stop.  I blow my nose with the Kleenex in my pocket before heading up the lift to do it all over again.

Skiing all began for me in sixth grade science.  It was near the beginning of October and Mr. Vanzandt announced that he would be starting a ski club and every one who wishes to join should get a form.  I acquired a form from the science teacher and took it home to request permission from my parents.  My parents read it over and agreed that sixty dollars was a fair price.  They signed the paper and sent it to school with me along with a check.  There was a meeting a few days before Christmas break that Mr. Vanzandt used to inform us of clothing to be warn.

The day we arrived back after Christmas was our first skiing trip.  Immediately after school we got on the bus for the twenty-minute drive to the ski slopes.  The day began with a skiing lesson.  Since this was my first time skiing the lessons were very basic.  For the next five weeks my skiing was filled with continual falling.  By the end of the five weeks I had a good hold on the basics and then the real skiing began.  For the next four years I continued to progress through the lessons and have been taking the advanced lesson for two years now.  For my third year of skiing my parents even bought me my own skis for Christmas.  I have gone from knowing nothing about skiing to becoming an advanced skier in just the four years I have been a member of the ski club.

Skiing has become one of my favorite aspects of winter and I hope to continue it for years to come.  It will soon be skiing season once again and another year of skiing will begin.
