Web Hosting
Once you have your page all created you are going to need some way to provide them to the outside world. This is called serving the pages and to do that you must have access to a host system with constant access to the Web. Below are my preferences for serving out pages some of them are free and some of them are cost money and it will depend upon how many vistors you receive and how big you site is on whether it will cost you or not.
- Serve them Youself - If you plan to do alot of business with your website and you are going to change it often you might want to consider hosting yourself. This means you will need a high speed connection to the web and a computer that can be completely dedicated to serving your pages. This computer will have to have a constant connection to the web and server software such as Apache. Then you must purchase a domain name and assign it to the system's IP address. Be forewarned though, this makes your site vulnerable to hacking and it is recommended you purchase some high quality security software.
- Tripod - Tripod is my favorite hosting service thus far. They have free and pay services. The free service limits bandwidth and space but if it is just a personal page or you are just starting out then it is perfect. It even allows you to use cgi, which is very useful. You also get 20mb of space to store all the files you will need. The downside to the free service is the ads and your domain name. There will always be ads at the top of your page and your domain name will be http://YOURNAME.tripod.com. If your site ever grows you can always get the pay version and they have different levels where you can pay for only what you need. If you pay you will be able to get a regular domain name and no ads also.
- Freeservers - This site is very much like tripod, you can get free service or you can pay for more if you need it. I do not like this one as much though because they only give you 12mb with a 0.12mb file size limit and no cgi capabilities. The only thing about it that is better than tripod is you can customize your DN(domain name) a little bit so that you get to choose the second part (ex. http://YOURNAME.YOURCHOICE.com).
- Pay servers - Then of course there are tons of pay servers all over the world in which you can pay to have your pages hosted. The link provided will take you to a comparison site there are lots of those too.
