The internet is a relatively new invention. In the short time it worked its way into almost every home in America and many other countries all over the world. It is now used for entertainment, research, opinions, and almost anything you can think of. The rapid spread of the world wide web is due in part to the ease of creating a web site. Anyone can create a webpage the only requirements are access to a computer with an internet connection and time. It is not always entirely free though. If you want your own web address such as www.google.com, etc. you will have to pay fees to register the domain name. Also, if you choose to get your own domain, you will need a server to host your page. A server is just a computer dedicated to serving a website to the world. You can set up your own but this requires a constant high speed connection to the internet. The alternative would be to pay a company to host your page for you. If this is your first experience with webpages I recommend using a free service. There are many services out there that will allow you to serve a webpage for free. The reason the are free is because your page is required to have an ad at the top of it and it also gives visitors a pop-up window with an add. This is a great way to start out your website though. You will be given a storage space and bandwidth. These are usually relativelly low on free servers but are usually sufficient. You'll find that your pages do not take up much storage space as long as you stick to pages and images. If you decide to provide movies, exe files, or other items for download you will find your space diminishes rather quickly. Bandwidth has to do with traffic to your site. When someone visits a page the page script and all images are downloaded onto the users computer. Bandwidth is how much you are allowed to serve out in a given time limit. You should not have a problem with bandwidth unless your site becomes really popular. If your site does start to use up you given bandwidth capacity I recommend you start to pay for a site and maybe add some advertisements to your site to help cover the costly fees involved in maintaining the website. This Tutorial will run through hosting your site on the internet and all the requirements for creating a good site. It will then run directly into the HTML Tutorial so that you may immediately start creating.
