The Point of having a website is to get information to the outside world so of course you need a way to get that information out there. That is where a server comes into play. There are special computers designed to be servers but almost any computer can be a server. a server must have a 24/7 connection to the internet and dial-up is not an option due to slow speed and the inability to keep a constant connection. You will also need server software that allows you to manage and protect your server. Also never keep important or personal files on the server and always back up you files (just in case you are hacked). If you do not have the right stuff to setup your own server you can pay someone else to serve your pages or do it for free. There are thousands of companies that devote themselves to running servers to get your pages to the outside world. I suggest you search and explore your options there are many different prices and services out there. And then there is the free choice. This is definitely the best options for those who are just starting a page. My Personal favorite free service would be tripod. On tripod your url will be formatted as follows: http://SITENAME.tripod.com. Tripod will also provide you with 20 mb of space *****bandwidth and allows you to write interactive cgi scripts which you will learn can do very neat things. Tripod also provides you with links to lots of documentation on creating a page. If your webpage gets to the point where you know your ready to get you own domain and pay for the site tripod will upgrade your account and you will get more space bandwidth and your own domain for a monthly fee. The only problem with this is you will have limited services and a long url. If you are creating a page for a business, organization, etc. I recommend you either get your own server or pay for one then register your domain. This will make it easier for people to find your page. Now that you know how to get your page out there lets get to it. The next page will give you requirements and software needed to create your page then we will dig in with your first taste of html. |
